This must be the place...
This is it. The good stuff. The gossip and the hand scribbled notes we founded Local Knowledge on. These are some examples of our favourite places dotted about the world. We have both lived in a variety of places and travelled far and wide. We have both got chatting to bar tenders and stayed on drinking after closing. We have both brought special coffee’s to share with baristas whilst visiting a new shop. If we’re being real… the knowledge isn’t the important bit. Sharing space and experiences with people is the good stuff and that’s just where the Local Knowledge comes from. Bakery 164, Bread & Meat, and Anemia are all completely different but all share a common thread. They’re run with love and harbour fond memories and thats pretty much what makes anywhere special to us.
More stories on our favourite places will be shared in various forms on this site. There will also be various reccomendations listed on our instagram highlights for people to check out. The main source will be a perk of our subscription service whereby each month we' will send out bits of Local Knowledge with your coffee’s for you to peruse and send on to your mate or visit yourself.
Bakery 164 - Leeds
This place is an absolute institution in the Leeds Uni food scene. You’ll be wrestling lectures and students alike for a favourable spot in the queue so best sneak out of your lecture/meeting before midday to get in quick. The smell of fresh baked foccacia baked upstairs is burnt into my memory, and the rotating weekly specials offer some truly sensational sandwiches. No umming and ahhing in here… you order or you’re out so make sure you know what you’re having before you get to the front.
This place was so speical to me that when I graduated I got a photo with the owner before I did my family so make of that what you will. My order: Roast Sweet potato, garlic chicken, smoked bacon and chilli mayo sandwich with a Lemon San Pelligrino and unreal rocky road, sat on the parky steps in the sunshine. Bosh.
Enjoy this OG spot guys, Tom x
Bread & Meat - Cambridge
When I worked as a fresh faced barista in Cambridge, I would eat my lunch every day at Bread & Meat. Nestled into Bene’t Street just a short walk away from the market square, owner Simon and his excellent team serve up the finest sandwiches, poutine and mixed bowls of meat, potatoes and roasted vegetables. Having lived in London for years now, I've found many establishments that come close but can’t say anywhere hits the spot more than Bread & Meat. I absolutely adore it. On my humble barista wage, I could barely afford to buy a proper lunch but I found myself at the mercy of Bread & Meat and their Porchetta Poutine every damn day! Go and find out for yourself just how great it is.
Enjoy guys, Ben x
Anemia Cafe - Lisbon
As you head out of the centre of Lisbon going west along the water, the crowds thin a little as you pass marinas, food quarters and open air gyms that follow the cycle path. Suddenly it seems tourists are everywhere as they flock to visit the Jerónimos Monastery and sample the famed custard tarts at Pastéis de Belém (you may have guessed there are better Pastelaria in Lisbon, but that is for another time). Heading uphill and inland the noise quiets rapidly and suddenly you are in suburban Lisbon and outside one of the most joyful and unsuspecting coffee shops. Nestled in the window between tasty pastries and a curated selection of surfboards and ceramics, you feel like you’re in a theatre watching people live out their life in the sunshine outside. The staff and owners were welcoming, and interested to know what we thought (the La Cabra on batch was singing). There are other excellent spots near the centre but if you want to get a run in, head down the coast and up to Anemia for a pit stop. You won’t regret it.
